Q: KD Wrote,
Can you put a male and female betta together? What are the precaustions we should know.
Is nipping at each other common?
A: Unless you are spawning you really don’t want to keep male and female bettas together. Even when you are trying to breed them it’s not uncommon for one or both to get hurt. Usually they are watched closely and only kept together for a short time.
It is my experience that it depends on the size of the tank. In my 10 gallon tank my male would nip at my female constantly (until she beat him up), in my 29 no problems and I even added another female. They are very territorial animals, but if you have two males of the same size, you can even put them in the same tank(provided it is big enough) and not have them fight each other. This is all based on my own personal experience though, it might all depend on the temperament of the specific Betta.
